The elders as their main duties are to lead the church by example, teach the Word, and help edify and encourage the body to grow individually and together.  Peter charges elders in 1 Peter 5 to "shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God, and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness, not yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock."  Among our elders is our pastor/teacher, one who the Apostle Paul tells us should excel at preaching and teaching.

God's bar is high for elders.  Paul instructs the elders in 1 Timothy 3 as follows: "An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectful, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, uncontentious, free from the love of money.  He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity... and he must have a good reputation with those outside the church."

The deacons look after those who need assistance, and provide support and service to the body, typified in the meaning of the word deacon, servant

God's bar is high for deacons as well.  Paul continues on and instructs the deacons in 1 Timothy 3 as follows: "Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience."

Many others at Lansing Bible Church serve in a variety of fashions, some in recognized fashion, some only the Lord sees their work. But the church is not a body that makes an artificial division between clergy and laity.  God calls ALL of the saints to service as clergy, some in full-time ministry, some to positions of leadership, but all to serve Him with their whole heart.  God gives each one of us in the body gifts to be used for His service.
